DAYTONA BEACH SURF FINSHING REPORT

Ocean looks like a lake, one trough past shore line, another 100 yrds past. ultralite with roostertail tipped w/ shrimp prooved effective today producing 3 large lady fish, 2 whiting, a pin fish a pompano and a blue. will try big surf rod on Wed. w/ cut mullet and a pompano rig w/ clams. will continue to search the shore line for the above fish and hopefully a red. water very murkey, sure could use a bit more wave action as this seems to bring about more fish by churning up the bottom. weather s… Continue

daytona area surf fishing report

Man!! what a disaster! is it possible for all of the fresh rain water to have altered the salinity of the sea water to the point where the fish have moved to better water? or rather, did the fresh water shock the fish? i can deal with wind and rain no problem. had to be the 25" plus of fresh water introduced into the ecosystem to alter the bite. The "Queen of Surf Fishing" Anne gave me a blue fish from her freezer and it produced a couple more blues but that was it. anyone who fishes south of th… Continue

to answer the other part of your question about how long to get back to normal, your situation may be different but it took us 6 to 8 weeks. We have several rivers dumping into the bay and it all flows out and along the beaches. We normally have beautiful water here but it seemed to stay dark and stained forever.

Joe - they have probably moved too far out for casting. You will need a boat to get to them. Sometimes you have to go several miles out to find clean water. Sorry for the bad news- don't shoot the messenger

Joe,
Those are good questions and I'm by no means an expert but I do have some ideas to your questions. As far as lube goes on the reels, I think it's sometimes best to use both grease and hot sauce. I think the grease is better for the ring and pinion gears - which is where you take the side plate off. The hot sauce is better for the shaft, springs, and all other moving parts. Yes, you can pack too much grease and make it more difficult to turn the handle smoothly. Sometimes less is more. You may want to try applying a protective film coating on the reel - like boeshield or others that are available in most tackle shops. This helps repel some of the water and salt. Regardless, you will have to take them apart frequently because of the extended use in and around the sand and salt. Surf fishing is a much more severe climate for reels than in a boat or on a pier - even if their designed for salt water.

As far as line twist is concerned, I know from using rooster tails in fresh water years ago, they are terrible about twisting line on a spinner. You may want to buy some small ball bearing swivels. They cost a lot more than a standard swivel but save a lot of grief. Up here, I troll with spinning reels and even when I use a large diving plug or spoons, the ball bearing swivels prevent line twist. You can get them in some really small sizes at tackle shops that cater to saltwater fishermen.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!
