FISHING DEEP FOR GIANT WAHOO

We fish a lot of Fish Attracting Devices here on the North coast of the Dominican Republic, ones that we make ourselves. I am getting ready to drop one in 500 fathoms and another in 750 fathoms, which is only 7 and 9 miles offshore! We have found, by drifting by the FADs in stealth mode, and running the Furuno depth machine on 50 KHz, that we are marking a lot of fish, way up current of the rope as it descends down to the weight. The depth of the marks varies, but we seem to see a lot of…See More

Fishing the Dominican Republic North Coast Drop

Summer fishing is heating up here on the North Coast of the dominican Republic, a wide-open, totally un-discovered, pioneer fishery. The blue marlin bite is on, ....a few weeks ago a estimated 750# blue was taken by a local fisherman. The fight lasted 4 1/2 hours on 50# test, stand up tackle in a 23` panga, now that`s fishing! Here on the North Coast, we have the advantage of really deep water close to shore, the drop is about 1,000` per mile offshore. We have place as many as 30 FAD`s, Fish…See More

Fishing the North coast of the Dominican Republic

Posted on January 6, 2012 at 5:29pm 0 Comments

Fishing here on the North coast of the Dominican Republic is very unique. I keep my 25` Superpanga in the Laguna Gri-Gri in the Rio San Juan, one of the most protected harbors in the Caribbean. The Laguna does have it`s limitations, mainly that of draft, at extreme low tide we only carry maybe 12" of draft. That limits the size of a sportfishing boat we can keep in the Laguna and be able to come and go when we want to. This is why the Panga design works so well for me. I draft less than 12",…

FAD (Fish Attracting Devices) Fishing at it`s Finest on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 2:13pm 0 Comments

The FADS we put out this summer are really producing fish for us now! We are doing very well on big Dorado, up to 50#`s or more, and some giant-sized wahoo. The biggest Dorado are wary sometimes, so we have to resort to light flurocarbon leaders and small hooks, and small live blue runners for bait. The big wahoo are laying deep, way up-current of the mainline of the FAD, sometimes 200# down, or deeper, we use breakaway leads, or a "secret material" that dissolves after about 5…

MAKING MORE FISH ATTRACTING DEVICES...FAD`s off the D.R.`s North Coast Drop

Posted on August 8, 2011 at 12:46pm 0 Comments

I`ve been spending the last week making up more material for my Fish Attracting Devices, FAD`s. FADS are a big part of the fishing here in the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. The typical FAD is made up of a 100 gal. old propane tank full of concrete, weighing in at around 400#`s or so. We`ve found that if you tie too many buoys on your FAD, that the drag of the current and waves, will actually move your weight. I have recovered one of my FAD`s, sometimes called "Fishing Stations", as…
